Greece–China Maritime History Initiative

The Greece–China Maritime History Initiative of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies explores the dynamic historical and economic relationships between Greece and China during the 20th century, focusing on Greek trade networks and the activities of Greek shipowners in East Asia. This research initiative investigates the maritime, commercial, and cultural exchanges that shaped Greek presence and influence in the region, highlighting the role of Greek shipping in connecting the Mediterranean and the Far East. Through archival research, oral histories, and collaboration with Chinese academic and cultural institutions, the program aims to shed light on an understudied aspect of modern Greek and global maritime history, while contributing to broader discussions on cross-cultural interaction, globalization, and economic diplomacy between Greece and China.
