The Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology — Hellas (IMS-FORTH) and Directorate of Modern Cultural and Intangible Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture) invite you to the opening of the travelling exhibition "From counter stern to stem: sailing ships of the 18th and 19th centuries" on Friday 28 June 2024, at 19:30 on the premises of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, Nikiforou Foka 130, Rethymno.
The exhibition includes historical data about the sailing shipping of the Greeks in the 18th and 19th centuries, information about the most representative sailing ships, starting with the three ships for which a 3D illustration was created, information about life on board, travel, the major ports of the era, and woodworking.
Visitors can, through a virtual interactive game, design and "sketch" their own ship.
In addition, the public has the opportunity to take a virtual visit to a 19th century sailing ship, using interactive methods that offer visitors a hands-on cultural experience using virtual reality (VR) and expand their knowledge with the use of additional information and augmented reality (AR) images.
Videos in the exhibition space highlight the way in which 19th century sailing ships were constructed and "rigged" through the process of modeling.
The exhibition is the outcome of the research project "Virtual Historic Sailing Ships" carried out by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (IMS-FORTH) in collaboration with the Department of Product & Systems Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean (UoA-DPSDE), the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia Thrace (FEMM-TH) and the company TETRAGON S.A., with funding from the Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Operational Programme (EPANEK 2014-2020).
