IMS mourns the loss of Alexis Politis (1945-2025)
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Professor Emeritus Alexis Politis of the University of Crete. A prominent member of the academic community of Rethymno, Alexis Politis directed research projects at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies from 1993 to 2008, on 19th century poetry and library catalogues, and was always present at the Institute's events, with which he maintained close contact. Just a few days ago, on 1 April 2025, Alexis Politis gave his last speech at an event of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in Rethymno. A pioneering scientist and always an active citizen, he was distinguished for the historical perspective with which he reflected on the creation and reception of Modern Greek literature throughout its entire course, but especially during the 18th and 19th centuries, essentially integrating it into the history of attitudes and cultural history. Alexis Politis's work broke new ground and will remain a milestone in the history of modern Greek philology. The Institute of Mediterranean Studies expresses its condolences to his family and friends.
