The Amargianaki Archive is the musicological archive of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH).
The archive corresponds to the deliverables of the four major research projects for which Professor of Ethnomusicology, Georgios Amargianakis (1938-2003) was the scientific supervisor:
- Greek Traditional Music (IMS-FORTH (RCC) / 1986-1990)
- Integrated Mediterranean Programs (IMPs) (1991-1994)
- Thalitas (GSRT-EPET II / 1994-1999) (IMS, DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC STUDIES (UOA))
- Crinno Music II (Region of Crete - CRINNO / 2000-2006)
The main axis of all Amargianaki’s research projects is the recording of traditional music (recordings, videos and transcriptions) in the field or in music studios.
The research has focused on the recording of Cretan traditional music and has left a legacy of precious archive material, both analogue and digital, such as:
- music recordings of the 1980s on reels
- documentaries from the 1990's that present a wider spectrum of the Cretan culture
- he two major research programmes on the violin and the lyre, Thalita and Crinno Music 2 respectively, which include rich archival material from transcribed interviews, biographical data, photographs and video recordings of Cretan musicians
