Call for Applications: Position for Post-Doc Researcher with a PhD in Ottoman History and/or Literature (or similar thematic topic)

The Program of Ottoman Studies of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies - Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IMS-FORTH), which is located in Rethymno, Crete (Greece), announces a Post-Doctoral scholarship for a scholar to participate in the implementation of the project 'OTTPOL - A History of Early Modern Ottoman Political Thought, 15th to Early 19th Centuries', which is implemented under the "Aristeia II" Action of the 2007-2013 Greek National Strategic Reference Framework (Operational Programme "Education and Lifelong Learning"), for a total duration of up to 16 months (end of term: July 2015).

Research objectives:

The post-doctoral fellow will be involved in primary research concerning Ottoman political thought, focusing in a sub-issue to be specified after the needs of the project and her/his own interests (e.g.: "fundamentalist" trends in 16th and 17th century legal and political thought; imperial ideology and the caliphate; and so forth), finally producing a chapter in a monograph on the history of Ottoman political thought, as well as at least two papers in English and/or French. S/he is also expected to locate and study unpublished manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish. S/he will also assist in the administration of the project through the organisation of a workshop and the future publication of its proceedings.

Location: The fellow is expected to be in residence at Rethymno until July 2015.

Contract duration / Salary: The duration of the post is up to 16 months, with a fixed end of term in July 2015. The fellow will receive a monthly net salary of ca. 1,200€ (plus social security costs etc.), depending on their personal situation, plus funds covering research trips and conference participations.

The potential candidate should have:

  1. A PhD in Ottoman History and/or Literature (or similar thematic topic), preferably specialized in the history of ideas; applicants should have obtained their doctorate within the last two years.
  2. Participation in a number of research projects or previous experience in archival research, with an emphasis to the study of manuscripts; applicants should read fluently Turkish and English; knowledge of other major languages (French, German) will be appreciated.
  3. A significant publication record in peer-review international journals and or conferences.
  4. Experience of working with Islamic manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish language; knowledge of Arabic and/or Persian will also be appreciated. The candidate should also have a proven ability to write fluently in English.

4.      Please note that the call for proposals for a contract for the lease of this project is not competitive, while any option counterparty has the character of acceptance of a proposal rather than "hiring".
