IMS mourns the loss of Aglaia Kasdagli
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas expresses its deep sorrow for the loss of her colleague Aglaia Kasdagli, Professor Emeritus of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete and collaborating faculty member of the Institute.
Aglaia Kasdagli, a graduate of the University of Athens, studied medieval history with one of the most important medievalists of the twentieth century, Rodney Hilton. After working for years as a researcher in Birmingham and Aberdeen, she returned to Greece and served with dedication at the University of Crete from 1994 to 2019. Her research and writing work, rich and multi-dimensional, has opened up new avenues in social and economic history and family history, social gender in history, geographical mobility and the circulation of knowledge, in Greece, especially the island area in the transition from the Middle Ages to early modern times, and in the use of primary historical material, especially the notarial documents.
Aglaia Kasdagli was an associate faculty member of IMS-FORTH from 2002 to 2019. The longest project she directed was the project "Marriage Contracts in Greece 1500-1830". Aglaia Kasdagli's research interests fed research projects at the Institute, producing knowledge in open access through the databases, the creation of which she supervised with the collaboration of the Institute's IT staff.
The administrative and scientific community of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies-FORTH expresses its sincere condolences to her family and bids her farewell, keeping as a legacy the smile, bravery and strength with which she overcame chronic health problems and continued to produce and contribute to our research work.
