Post Doc Researcher with PhD in Ottoman History and very good knowledge of Ottoman Turkish and Ottoman Palaeography

The Programme of Ottoman Studies of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies/Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas (IMS-FORTH), announces a Post-Doc fellowship. The post is funded by the Programmatic Contract between the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas, under the framework of the Hellenic Republic and Siemens Settlement Agreement.

Research objectives

The research objectives of the post include: research in original Ottoman archival sources about water and the management of water resources in Ottoman Crete with an emphasis on the region of Heraklion (Ott. Kandiye). The successful candidate will have to locate and conduct original research in Ottoman archival sources, that he/she will have to read and summarize. He/she will also have to provide all necessary information from these sources to other members of the research team, who will be responsible for entering data into the relevant databases and thematic maps, as well as to contribute to academic publications and conference papers. The successful candidate needs to have a strong stimulus and be able to collaborate and interact constructively within a research team.

Necessary Requirements:

1.        PhD in Ottoman History, preferably on a topic about Ottoman Crete. Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degree within the last three years.

2.        Proven very good knowledge of Ottoman Turkish and Ottoman Palaeography.

3.        Participation in research projects and/or previous experience in archival research, preferably research in Ottoman archives about Crete.

4.        Publications in academic journals and collective volumes and/or participation in international conferences.

5.        Fluent knowledge of Turkish and English; knowledge of other major languages (e.g., French, German) will be appreciated.

Location: Rethymno, Crete, Greece.

Contract duration / Salary: The duration of the post is 17 or 18 months with a monthly gross salary of 2,000 Euros.
