Abdulmennan M. Altıntaş is a maritime historian specializing in the early modern period of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. He earned his Ph.D. from Istanbul University in 2017 with a dissertation titled “From the Red Sea to the Mediterranean: Trade, Diplomacy and Routes 1600-1700”. His research interests include local and international maritime activities in the Red Sea, commercial networks between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean via the Red Sea route, and historical geography. Dr. Altıntaş has recently published articles on the East India Company’s commercial endeavors in Yemeni ports, Ottoman shipbuilding at the Suez shipyard, and the Janissaries in Egypt. Prior to joining the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS), he was a visiting researcher at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Mediterranean Studies. From 2020 to 2024, he conducted research on the place of the Janissaries in the social, political and economic life of Egypt as part of the JaNet Project at IMS. Currently, under the STASH Project, he is examining smuggling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean (1853–1914), with a particular focus on the port of Alexandria.
