MAPFARM

Mapping the Early Farmers in Thrace

Τhe Laboratory of Geophysical-Satellite Remote Sensing and Archaeo-environment participates in the project MAPFARM which is held under the auspices of the Democritus University of Thrace and funded by Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. The lab has undertaken the task of the large scale geophysical mapping of various neolithic sites in Xanthi and Rodopi.

The MAPFARM project focuses on the archaeological remains of Neolithic farmers in Aegean Thrace with the main goal of investigating the beginning of farming and the appearance of early farmers in the region, their social organization and cultural attributes. To this end, selected Neolithic settlements in the two regions of Thrace, their intra-site organization, houses and other constructions will be explored. The surrounding area of the settlements will be also examined in order to gain insight into the complexity of their paleoenvironment. The study of the available archaeological material collected from the surface of the selected settlements will provide details on the history of their inhabitation and the cultural attributes of early farmers.
