Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1969. Σπούδασε στο τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών και στη συνέχεια πραγματοποίησε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο Bordeaux III. Έχει ζήσει πολλά χρόνια στην Αργεντινή όπου εκπόνησε και τη διδακτορική διατριβή της με έδρα το τμήμα Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης. Από το 2007 διδάσκει Ιστορία της Αμερικανικής Ηπείρου στο Τμήμα Ιστορίας του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου, αρχικά ως Λέκτορας και στη συνέχεια ως Επίκουρη Καθηγήτρια. Επίσης από το 2003 διδάσκει Ιστορία  των χωρών της Λατινικής Αμερικής  στο Ελληνικό Ανοιχτό Πανεπιστήμιο.

Τα κύρια επιστημονικά της ενδιαφέροντα είναι η κοινωνική, πολιτική και πολιτισμική ιστορία της Λατινικής Αμερικής καθώς και οι διαμερικανικές σχέσεις. Η ερευνητική της δραστηριότητα αφορά κυρίως τη μετανάστευση, την εργασία και ζητήματα ταυτότητας στις χώρες της Νοτίου Αμερικής. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε αρκετά ερευνητικά προγράμματα (Πυθαγόρας, Αριστεία, μεταξύ άλλων) ενώ από το 2001 συνεργάζεται ως ερευνήτρια με το Αρχείο Προφορικής Ιστορίας και Φωτογραφίας Γυναικών (Archivo de Palabras e Imágenes de Mujeres), με έδρα τη Φιλοσοφική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου του Μπουένος Άιρες (U.B.A).

Αυτή την περίοδο είναι επιστημονική υπεύθυνη στο πρόγραμμα με θέμα "Migration and strategies of development in the periphery of the “Western World” during the early Post-World War II period (Greece, Portugal / Brazil, Argentina)"/ ΕΛΙΔΕΚ κωδ. 2616. 

Είναι συγγραφέας των έργων Έλληνες μετανάστες στην Αργεντινή: διαδικασίες συγκρότησης και μετασχηματισμοί μιας μεταναστευτικής κοινότητας, 1900-1970 (2004) και  Ιστορία της Λατινικής Αμερικής από το τέλος της αποικιοκρατίας μέχρι σήμερα (2014). Έχει επιμεληθεί τα έργα Θέματα και τάσεις της σύγχρονης Λατινοαμερικανικής Ιστοριογραφίας, Αθήνα, Ε.Μ.Ν.Ε. - Μνήμων, 2010 και Σιμόν Μπολίβαρ. Ο απελευθερωτής των συνειδήσεων. Θεμελιώδη κείμενα (μετάφραση, εισαγωγή, σχόλια Μαρία Δαμηλάκου), Αθήνα, Νότιος Άνεμος, 2014, καθώς και τον τόμο 200 χρόνια από τα επαναστατικά κινήματα για την ανεξαρτησία της Λατινικής Αμερικής, 1810- 2010, Αθήνα, Ε.Μ.Ν.Ε. - Μνήμων, 2011.

Maria Damilakou is Assistant professor of History of the American Continent at the Department of History of the Ionian University of Greece (Corfu). She studied history at the Universities of Athens and Bordeaux III (D.E.A. 1993) and obtained her Ph.D. in 2001 from the University of Crete, Department of History & Archaeology with Ph.D. topic: “Greek Immigrants in Argentina: Construction and Transformations of a Migrant Community, 1900-1970”.
