Mateu Portells Watson

Mateu Portells Watson was born on the island of Mallorca in 1996. He graduated in Classical Philology from the University of Barcelona in 2020. In 2022, he received an MPhil in Classics from Trinity College Dublin, where he studied the textual transmission of the Iliad in southeastern Italy during the thirteenth century. Since 2023, he is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Crete. His interest in textual scholarship throughout history has led him from the translation of contemporary Greek literature into his native Catalan, to the study of Mediaeval Greek palaeography and the research of Ancient Greek and Latin written sources.

He has participated in the 2022 Oxford Summer School in Greek Palaeography, and presented his MPhil thesis “A study of Book Γ΄ of the Iliad in TCD MS 922” at the 2023 conference of the European Society for Textual Scholarship. His translations from Modern Greek figure in the Αέριδες / Torre dels Vents journal, published by the Catalan Association of Neohellenistic Studies.
