Matteo Barbano is a maritime historian specialising in seaborne mass mobilities, maritime labour, and imperial history from the late seventeenth to the early twentieth century. He is currently a postdoc research fellow at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (FORTH) of Rethymno, where he investigates maritime smuggling and its connections with shipping companies within the ERC Starting Grant project STASH. Between 2024 and 2025, he has been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow with the project MedMaD: Mediterranean Mass Mobilities and Displacements in the Age of Steam (1869–1914) at the University of Genova and has previously worked as a researcher in two other ERC projects on maritime and Ottoman history (SeaLiT and JANET). Among his publications are Within the Straits: Tangeri, gli inglesi e il Mediterraneo occidentale nella seconda metà del XVII secolo (Palermo University Press–NDP, 2019) and the co-edited volume Mediterranean Seafarers in Transition: Maritime Labour, Communities, Shipping and the Challenge of Industrialization, 1850s–1920s (Brill, 2022), alongside numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles in international journals.
